NEC to return to the US mobile phone market

NEC plans to re-enter the US mobile handset market this year to strengthen its advanced Internet-capable phone operations. The Japanese company is in talks with several US operators over the use of its 2.5G phones.

The move reflects the desire of the Japanese electronics industry to strengthen its presence in the global mobile phone market through 3G handsets. Several large US operators are deploying GPRS networks, bridging the gap to the faster 3G networks. NEC is moving to build agreements now with US operators, ready for the rollout of 3G.

NEC, with its partner Matsushita, already manufactures 3G phones for NTT DoCoMo, Japan’s top mobile operator. This is providing NEC with valuable experience that gives the company an edge over its global competitors.
