The operator first launched in November 2001, but stopped taking new customers in December because neither DT’s T-Online mobile unit nor Vodafone’s D2 mobile unit (which control 80% of the German mobile market) would connect their subscribers to Quam phones. They cited technical problems, although Quam was skeptical of this explanation.
Quam, owned by Telefonica and Sonera, is a 3G license holder in Germany. It is currently using E-Plus’ network to provide GSM services as a mobile virtual network operator, building up its brand and establishing a customer base.
