The company said the decision to look at alternatives for this business is part of Lucent’s continuing strategy to sharpen its focus on the systems, software and services that will deliver the next-generation communications infrastructure.
Over the next few months we will determine which approach will provide the most benefits for our customers, our shareholders and our employees, said Bill O’Shea, executive vice president, corporate strategy and business development in a company statement. We are taking this bold move so we can better focus our resources and investments on the areas critical to our markets, while making it easier for the fiber team to expand its customer base and make the capital investments necessary to meet the increasing global demand for fiber and fiber cable.
O’Shea noted that Lucent’s optical fiber business is a leading player in a growing market, and he described its performance as stellar, growing by more than 60% in fiscal 2000.
