With long-time partner Microsoft, NAI will provide anti-virus and personal firewall software to users of MSN Premium, a broadband service Microsoft intends to shortly launch in the US. McAfee has worked with MSN for at least three years.
On MSN Dial-up and MSN Plus, cheaper MSN internet access services, the McAfee software will be included as a trial, with users able to buy subscriptions at a discounted price if they like it, the companies said.
In Japan, NAI has been co-developing a lightweight anti-virus engine for mobile phones with DoCoMo since May 2002, and said Friday they hope to have a finished product for inclusion on DoCoMo handsets by the end of next year.
The companies also said they will consider submitting their final work to standards organizations. Currently, viruses on phones are not an imminent threat, but future open wireless networks may change that.
