Bio-key is a fingerprint and database technology developer that provides finger-based biometric identification to law enforcement departments, public safety agencies, governments and private sector customers.
Likewise, Aether’s Mobile Government Division provides software used by local, state and federal law enforcement officers to access different kinds of databases wirelessly through laptop and handheld computers. It has a customer base of 2,500 agencies.
The sell-off of the division continues the recent purging of assets at Owing Mills, Maryland-based Aether. The company recently announced it would sell its transportation division to investment firm Platinum Equity for $25 million in cash. Last December, it agreed to offload its enterprise mobile middleware division to TeleCommunications Systems Inc. for $19 million in cash.
Aether once sought to dominate the market for wireless technology services for companies, but now plans a new future managing a leveraged portfolio of mortgage-backed securities.
Revenues at Aether’s Mobile Government Division are roughly $19 million per annum, based on the last two quarters’ performance.
The sale is subject to the usual closing conditions.
