VeriSign says RFID/EPC-using companies should consider PKI-based authentication, certificate-based 128-bit encryption and standards-based access control tokens. By happy coincidence, VeriSign uniquely offers these three services.

VeriSign runs the root of the EPC network, an addressing system that, much like domain names identify web sites, will be used in supply chain management systems to uniquely identify product units bearing the EPC codes that RFID technology will track.

The company also offers an EPC Starter Service, a set of developer tools and services designed to spur adoption of the technology, which VeriSign expects will start producing revenue next year. Security will become a component of that kit, the firm said.
