Huawei has opened a new $170m research and development (R&D) centre in Bengaluru, India, whch is claimed to be its largest facility outside China.
Spread over 20 acres of space in Bengaluru’s IT corridor, the facility has a capacity to accommodate 5,000 engineers. The Chinese firm’s facility currently has 2,700 people and will focus on building future technologies and patents.
Huawei India R&D centre chief operating officer Wilson Wang was quoted by IANS as saying: "We are committed to the ‘Made in India’ campaign, as we are the first Chinese firm to set up our software product development centre in Bengaluru."
Wang added: "Our journey of globalisation began with the first overseas R&D centre in Bengaluru, where we also have the main software development and delivery units for our global customers. Of the 2,700 engineers, 98 percent of them are local.
"As our innovation hub, the centre will develop software platforms, components and applications for various product lines of its parent company. This R&D facility is a fulfillment of our long-cherished dream."
The facility will also encompass an R&D Block, customer experience centre, multilevel car park, cafeteria, and residential block for emigrant employees.
