Sun is endorsing the move of WS-addressing to the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), even though the specification forms a central part of the WS- web services roadmap developed by Microsoft and IBM along with other, select, companies.
WS-Addressing underpins WS-Federation and WS-ReliableMessaging, which rivals the Sun-backed Liberty Alliance Project and WS-Reliability respectively. WS-Reliabilty, ratified by the Organization for the Advancement for Structured Information Standards (OASIS) is also backed by Oracle Corp, Fujitsu, and NEC Corp.
Backing from Sun for WS-Addressing follows an April technology collaboration agreement and legal settlement between Sun and Microsoft, which saw an undertaking to work together on interoperability of technologies.
A Sun spokesperson said yesterday there is no indication yet which other standards and specifications on the WS-roadmap Sun would also participate in, but added: We are now working closely with Microsoft on interoperability and standards.
Companies also supporting WS-Addressing’s W3C move are BEA Systems Inc. and SAP AG.
WS-Addressing defines a standard mechanism to identify a web services’ destination, simplifying the exchange of web services messages between multiple end points.
