The MedChip Electronic Health Record (EHR), which consists of the card and MedKey’s EHR application, is intended to enable patients to wear their medical records on a wristband, necklace or key chain.

The device can be read by USB-enabled computers and via the SD interface found on Personal Digital Assistants (PDAS) and smartphones. MedKey says that consumers will be able to update their health history by accessing the drive via their USB ports, while authorized health personnel will be able to quickly access patient data by plugging the MedChip directly into a SD Card slot or via a USB port.

MedKey will also offer its Digital Rights Management (DRM) architecture, designed to provide security of patient information, and will aim to allow secure transmission to a Patient Data Repository, MedBase.com, for patient record storage and medical analysis.

Additionally, MedKey is introducing MedChip Rx, which consists of the SD/USB card and pharmaceutical clinical trial and drug interaction software, to securely store a patient’s prescription medicine information.

The MedChip is expected to be available through selected distributor channels and major clinical hospitals and pharmaceutical companies in the first half of 2005.
