Waltham, Massachusetts-based Black Duck was formed at the end of 2003 in response to concerns about the integrity of open source code. The company’s protexIT tool can detect proprietary and open source code users’ solution stacks and tell users the potential intellectual property risks they face.
Under the new agreement, Black Duck will work with Raleigh, North Carolina-based Red Hat through its Open Source Assurance program to offer joint service offerings to help users assess and implement IP best practices and deliver Black Duck protexIP/development and other IP risk management solutions through Red Hat Network systems management software.
Meanwhile, Red Hat has also introduced version 1.0 of its open source Java Application Server product after eight months of beta testing. The product is the latest delivery in Red Hat’s strategy to build an Open Source Architecture on top of its Enterprise Linux distribution. The suite already includes Portal Server, Content Management System, Cluster Suite, and Developer Suite.
The product includes some of the most popular open source Java functionality and technologies, including JOnAS for Enterprise Java Beans and Tomcat for Java Server Pages and Servlets.
JOnAS and Tomcat also cover JakartaServer Management via Java Management Extensions, while web services is covered by the Apache Software Foundation’s AXIS SOAP implementation.
There is also functionality for pooling, caching and storage optimization, as well as messaging and transaction support and clustering for failover and load-balancing. The software supports IA-32 processors, as well as Intel Corp’s 64-bit Itanium and IBM Corp’s PowerPC.
Red Hat also announced that BEA Systems Inc has been working with the company to integrate Beehive – BEA’s open source version of WebLogic Workshop’s controls, JWS files, Java Page Flows and XML Beans – into future versions of Red Hat Application Server.
The product has also been welcomed by Oracle Corp, which plans to support the development and deployment of web services to Red Hat Application Server using Oracle JDeveloper 10g.
