The agreement comes nine months after Atos Origin was contracted to develop a new business and IT strategy for ChemChina, formerly known as the Chinese Ministry of Chemical Industry. ChemChina, which has annual revenue of approximately CNY 80bn, is aiming to increase this to CNY 100bn ($13.3bn) over the next two years.

Paris, France-based Atos Origin is on course to become one of the first Western IT services players to establish a major presence in the Chinese market, using its status as services provider for next summer’s Olympic Games in Beijing to attract customers. In January 2006, the company won a deal worth around $33m with the Hong Kong government, and in 2005 it secured a contract with Chinese oil and petrochemicals group SinoPec.
