IBM has grabbed the largest market share in the European systems and network management software (SNMS ) market in 2009 that is dominated by five largest vendors, which account for more than half of the total European SNMS market revenue, according to market research and analysis firm IDC.

IDC said that many new vendors has entered the market, providing innovative offerings aimed at specific management challenges, such as virtualisation and cloud management.

The market analyst expects to see continued vendor consolidation in the crowded SNMS market, with large vendors acquiring smaller vendors to expand their portfolios and capabilities.

Patrik Bihammar, research manager of Infrastructure Software, Europe, said: "The evolving market developments and requirements to manage new technologies and IT models will put growing pressure on SNMS vendors to continue to evolve their offerings, and IDC expects that competition will be fierce and intensify moving forward.

"Ultimately, customers will be the ones benefiting from the increasing competitive pressure and maturity of SNMS solutions."
