Rail network CrossCountry has launched the trial of mobile ticket service on its York-Edinburgh route. Passengers travelling on this route will have an option to get their tickets on their mobile phone through an MMS.
The company has also launched the mobile version of its website to make it easy for the travellers to access train information on their mobile phones. The mobile site, m.crosscountrytrains.co.uk, includes live travel updates, ticket booking, a timetable download application and latest news.
Travellers can buy the new m-ticket on crosscountrytrains.co.uk and sign up via the ‘m-ticket’ icon. The ticket is sent to the mobile phone as an MMS. It includes a security barcode, journey details and the customer name. Travellers need not take a print out but show the MMS with the barcode to the train manager.
David Watkin, commercial director at CrossCountry, said: “Our new m-ticket trial is yet another step forward for CrossCountry as it helps simplify the ticket buying process. Early customer feedback has been positive. People now expect to do so much more whilst on the move and we want to meet that expectation. We hope the trial will prove successful to enable us to roll out our m-ticket product across all CrossCountry services.”
CrossCountry launched the e-ticket service in November last year, to enable travellers book tickets online. Last year, the company has also launched a social media application, ‘Map your mates’, on Facebook to help the users in the UK to link to CrossCountry’s online journey planner and seat booking facility.
