One of those slow-burning stories should go into the public domain next Monday, when AT&T Co is expected to announce an agreement under which Go Corp, Foster City, California will do a version of its PenPoint operating system for AT&T’s Hobbit RISC. Back in February, we told subscribers that AT&T had done the deal with Go – and that the chip was in use at Eo Computer Co, also in Foster City, where it is developing a hand-held pen-driven micro (CI No 1,862). The Hobbit chip, originally co-developed with Apple Computer Inc, is being directed specifically at the portable market, and as well as putting Penpoint on Hobbit, Go is also working with AT&T on standards for wireless communications for portable devices, the New York Times reports. AT&T Ventures has been assiduous in investing in start-up portable and pen-based computer companies, backing Eo, and also Apple spin-out General Magic Corp, doing software for portables, and SunDisk Inc, which makes storage peripherals for portable computers.
