Irvine, California-based WangDAT Inc has signed an OEM agreement with Digital Equipment Corp’s Digital-Kienzle GmbH joint venture with Mannesmann AG: the agreement calls for WangDAT to provide over $1m of its Model 2600 data compression digital audio tape drive for use in Digital-Kienzle’s Unix and proprietary systems; the Model 2600 is a dual format unit providing 1.3Gb for data interchange and over 3Gb in data compression format; the data compression mode is selectable via a software switch enabled over the SCSI bus, and the Model 2600 supports advanced operations using the SCSI Copy command to transfer data directly from the hard disk to the digital audio tape unit without interrupting the host system; the Model 2600 uses WangDAT’s DATAClass mechanism, incorporating an in-path tape tension sensing device with digital speed control.
