AT&T Co is cutting about 700 jobs from its residential telephone consumer products operations, but the cuts will be offset by an addition of about 250 jobs in Salt Lake City, where it plans to consolidate much of its order handling activity; the cutbacks result from users moving to buying rather than leasing residential telephones; over the next 14 months, AT&T will consolidate to Salt Lake City and Jacksonville, Florida ordering operations now located in Salt Lake, Jacksonville, Denver and Springfield, Massachusetts; 283 of the jobs to go are in Atlanta – the Atlanta Service Centre, which repairs and refurbishes residential phones, will cut 168 jobs and the National Distribution Services Centre, which processes orders for shipping leased equipment to customers, will be phased out over the next 14 months, affecting 115 jobs.
