Newbridge Networks Ltd and Siemens AG are tightening an existing collaborative agreement to include research and development of future products. The agreement calls for joint development of kit based on Newbridge’s Mainstreet range which includes multiplexers, cross-connect systems and its network management systems. However the companies say that they also envisage the joint development of new, future-oriented products which apparently translates as Asynchronous Transfer Mode and Synchronous Digital Hierarchy-based offerings. Both companies would undoubtedly gain from cooperation. Bert Whyte, Newbridge vice-president of business network products, says that the company is especially keen to capitalise on Siemens’ experience of working with public telecommunications operators. In particular, operators have the problem of incorporating new technology into the existing network, and it is in this kind of area that the first work will take place. Other observers point out that Siemens’ position as one of the largest suppliers of silicon for telecommunications applications could come in very handy for future products like Newbridge’s forthcoming 36150 switch. This is a large ATM/SDH box – due to ship next year with a maximum speed of around 40Gbps. For Siemens’ part, the company is most interested in getting its hands on Newbridge’s expertise in the data communications network market, according to a company spokesman. With growth in data communications outstripping that of its traditional telecommunications stronghold, Siemens has been forging a number of alliances, with Newbridge only the most recent partner.
