Despite sales up 20% in the first half of 1993, times are getting tougher for Walldorf-based SAP AG, the German software house, where operating profit fell 8.4% at the equivalent of $36.5m. Sales rose to $267.7m; net profit for the last 12 months fell 24.4% to $21.7m. The decline in net profit, the company said, was due to supplemental development projects which created unforeseen costs. In fact, the company reported research and development expenditures in the first half of 1993 up 29% over the first half of 1992 to $72.9m. Germany accounted for 56.4% of revenues for the first half of 1993, down from 60.7% in 1992. Software product sales were up 25.8% in the first half, to $152m while training and consulting sales rose to $107.6m from $97.8m in the same period in 1992.
