Microsoft Corp will release an upgrade to Word next April that emphasises customisability and automation, PC Week reports: the company hopes to distinguish Word for Windows 3.0 by making the enhanced word processor work smarter, adding customisable floating tool bars, and automatic writing, editing and formatting capabilities; users will also be able to pre-set links with other Windows applications using Object Linking and Embedding 2.0 – an Excel worksheet will automatically start up in a Word for Windows 3.0 document; called Insitu editing, this feature is provided in the Object Linking and Embedding 2.0 specification; other automation features include automatic updating of glossaries, repeated table headers on each page and the ability to save formatting without setting up a template; a clear leader in the Windows word-processing market has still to emerge, despite Microsoft’s early lead, the paper says.
