British Telecommunications Plc is expected to buy a 20% stake in the Seattle, Washington McCaw Group – but it is not clear whether the holding will be in the McCaw Cellular Communications Inc subsidiary, which is holds the biggest portfolio of cellular telephone franchises in the US, and went public in the summer of 1987 by issuing 10% of its equity – or with the parent, privately-held McCaw Communication Cos, which as well as about 90% of the cellular business, has cable television and other interests. The latter seems the more likely.
