Memorex Telex International NV has four new subsystems for the AS/400, including a 5440 rack-mounted cartridge tape and 3832 5.25 disk storage subsystem. At the higher end, Memorex is offering the 5490 cartridge tape subsystem with Enhanced Data Recording Capability, and the 3898-3, a combined controller and cache unit for 3890 disk subsystems. The 5440 tape subsystem has a 10 cartridge auto-loader, and it uses 3480 cartridges for data interchange between AS/400 machines and 370-based processors. The 3832 attaches to AS/400 models B30 to B70, and with a 600Mb capacity, it uses a dual processor controller. The 3898-3 cache controller has up to 256Mb of cache and 4Mb of non-volatile storage. It also has dual cache managers to boost system performance and provide redundancy. The 5490 is built on the same technology as the 5480, but Memorex says that the Enhanced Data Recording Capability can boost cartridge capacity by up to five times. It has an Extended Auto Cartridge Loader that can automatically deliver 24 cartridges to the tape transport. The 3832 is available now, and both the 5440 – which costs $37,500 and 5490 tape subsystems will be shipping next month. The 3898-2 cache controller is scheduled for the second quarter of 1991. No prices were given for the other products.
