That model of West German dynamism and efficiency, AEG AG, now safe under the wing of Daimler-Benz AG, last year turned in its first profit from operations for 16 years – it had reported profits in the middle of the decade, but these all came from asset sales; in 1988, the company made a net profit of $15m on turnover up 15% to $7,444m; the big AEG Olympia AG office systems and equipment unit is still losing big money, and heavy investment at Modular Computer Systems Inc helped put its foreign units into the red.
