Alcatel-Lucent said that it has enhanced its optical networking portfolio with coherent technology, which it claims to allow operators to deal, in a cost-effective and automated manner, with transmission impairments which become severe at speeds higher than 100gigabits per second (Gbit/s).
Alcatel Lucent said that it is implementing coherent detection in key optical platforms with the goal of helping service providers transform their existing networks to ease the strain caused by high bandwidth applications, while maintaining performance. In addition, the technology can support further evolution to speeds over 100G on the same platform when the market dictates.
The optical networking portfolio allows for wavelength assignment and restoration, as well as transmission of any hybrid traffic mix. It can transmit mixed 10, 40 and 100G signals without the need for guard bands or network reengineering, and traverse multiple nodes without additional regeneration, the company said.
