The nail-biting is over for Control Data Corp – and the Soviets – and the company has now won US Commerce Department approval to ship those six Cyber 960 mainframes to the Soviet Union, which wants the machines to monitor its nuclear power stations and prevent the possibility of another disaster like the one at the Chernobyl power station. Control Data, which now plans to start shipments next month, reckons that the machines are the most powerful to be delivered to the Soviets, and, of particular importance to Control Data these days, are valued at $32m.
