Roughly one customer a day is defecting from Sun to HP, wooed by the prospects of reduced costs and risk, says HP.

HP has partnered with Microsoft, Novell and Red Hat as part of its newly enhanced HP Complete Care programme. aimed at helping customers make the transition from Sun to HP platforms as hassle-free as possible. These partnerships give customers a choice of operating systems to choose from once they make the move.

“In my experience, CIOs have three core agendas: risk, cost and cycle time. If you look at risk, clearly there’s a degree of uncertainty over Sun – both because of what’s happening with the EC and because customers planning their infrastructure don’t feel there’s a clear roadmap from Sun,” said Tom Johnson, a business development manager at HP.

On the cost front, Johnson said that migrating to HP could cut costs potentially by up to 38%. Finally, Johnson pointed out that HP could help turn around the 80:20 rule, ensuring that CIOs could spend 80% of their time on innovation rather than on maintenance.

Enhancements to the programme also included discounts on training. Customers will also have help assessing their environments and the best ways to migrate as part of the programme.
