Convex Computer Corp, Richardson, Texas has installed a C220 minisupercomputer at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Falmouth, Massachusetts for use in signal processing applications: the system is being used to model acoustic and seismic wave propagation in the ocean, for developing real time image analysis techniques, to design and test the performance of the numerical model used to simulate the ship’s positioning of Argo-Jason probe as it moves along the ocean floor, and to map the temperature and currents of the ocean in three dimensions, based on measurements of sound waves, work that may be of use in weather forecasting.
