Although the Spanish information technology industry’s exports increased by 78.3% last year, 64% up on 1988, imports have continued to dominate the sector, according to Tribuna Informatica. The sector’s commercial balance shows a deficit of $2,722m for 1989, a similar figure to the 1988 results. If the electronic sector is included in the assesment the deficit figure rises to $7,642m 22% up on 1988. In information technology, peripherals made up 37% of total purchases abroad but was also the leading category in exports. Within the electronics industry the information technology subsector was the biggest importer and exporter. Electronic components came next on the import list, the greatest part of which was semiconductor purchases.
