United Airlines, in process of consolidating its San Francisco and Chicago data centres at its Chicago base, has given Unisys Corp an order totalling $8m for one of the new top-end 2200/600 mainframes, plus an 1100/92 as an interim measure. The 2200 machine will take over United’s Unimatic flight operations application which currently runs on an 1100/93 and does flight planning, flight information, crew management, weight and balance, and aircraft routing. United has 95% of its maintenance applications running on two Unisys 1100/83, and these are to move over at a later stage to the 1100/93. The new 1100/92 will be replaced by the 2200/600 starting in November.
