Ultra Network Technologies, San Jose, California is capitalising on IBM’s promise to offer 100M-byte-per-second channels for scientific processing (CI No 1,187), by winning an IBM Business Partner and Authorised Industry Application Specialist agreement with the company. Ultra’s HSCnp system links IBM 3090s to its own 1Gbps UltraNet network, and is claimed to be the first product in the market to link 3090s to high-speed, hetereogeneous networks of other high performance scientific and technical systems. The HSC channel connections for the ES/3090 were developed co-operatively between the two companies over the last year and Ultra has installed four UltraNet HSCnp systems at IBM for integration and performance testing. The Ultra HSCnp connection achieves a sustained data rate in excess of 70Mbytes per-second from a 3090 to an UltraNet Frame Buffer using Open Systems TP4 protocols, the company claims.
