Unisys Corp has two new BTOS workstations, the entry-level B28 LCW starting at just $2,000, and the B28-EXP, which supports up to 11 cluster workstations. The EXP has an internal X-Bus slot for customer-installable X-Bus modules; both use the 80286 with up to 8Mb memory. An extended video feature of the B28-LCW and B28-EXP supports a wide range of BTOS monitors, and a Token Ring Network module, TCP/IP software, Open Systems local net transport software, a new IBM SNA transport with PU2.1 peer-peer compatibility, new Cobol II compiler compatible with IBM, X/Open and Ryan-McFarland Cobol were added. The B28-EXP is $3,000 with 2Mb, the B25-TR2 Token Ring module $1,800. Unisys also has a new multi-resolution video controller claimed to do VGA video up to seven times faster than that of the IBM equivalent on multi tasking, multi-user CTOS applications. The GC-x04 is based on a 20,000-gate Application-Specific Integrated Circuit with register-level compatibility with the IBM 8514 1,024 by 768 by 4 controller. CTOS users on a Series 386 with new $1,600 VC-003 16 screen can run most VGA MS-DOS programs in 256 colours from 256,000 at full VGA resolution; it’s $1,050 to $1,500.
