Rackspace Hosting has announced that TotalKiss.com has moved a number of its websites to the cloud, aiming for infrastructure flexibility, reliability and cost reductions.
Ten websites, including Kiss 100, Kiss 101 and Kiss 105-108 will now be hosted and managed in Rackspace’s cloud.
The sites have many Web 2.0 features, such as blogs, forums and comment boxes, so user interaction is high. This, along with regular competitions and ad campaigns, can cause spikes in user demand. TotalKiss.com hopes that moving its infrastructure to the cloud will enable its sites to cope with surges in demand.
The company settled on Rackspace without issuing a tender for the contract, with Gareth Morris, lead developer at TotalKiss.com, claiming that the support offered by Rackspace was a major factor in the decision.
“We chose to work with Rackspace because of its genuine Fanatical Support promise – I know I can drop into live chat any time, day or night and highly experienced support staff are there to respond to any questions instantly. For a 24/7 media business this peace-of-mind is invaluable,” Morris said.
Morris added that the financial savings offered by cloud computing also played a big part in the decision.
“Other benefits include the pricing model of cloud computing – we just pay-as-we go, which saves us investing in hardware that may become redundant at a later date,” he said. “We have removed the need to invest in physical hardware and the day-to-day system admin headaches have been eradicated. In comparison to our previous external dedicated platform we have saved 50% on extra costs.”
