Intergraph Corp, Huntsville, Alabama has two new extensions to its Distributed Publishing System – a colour image manipulation and editing program and a computer-assisted translation system. The first, DP/Studio, provides fully integrated text, vector and raster manipulation in one system, and offers global and localised colour correction, retouching, and full imaging manipulation. Other functions include positioning, alignment aids, and a multifunction cloning utility tool. The user interface is specifically designed for a graphic arts environment, and integrates into the Distributed Publishing System to provide image and art creation and assembly for incorporation into a production-ready page or piece of art. It runs on Intergraph’s 6000 Series of Clipper RISC-based workstations and servers, and offers a palette of 16m colours. It will be next quarter at $4,000. The company also introduced DP/Translator for the Distributed Publishing System. It offers multi-language translation for DP/Publisher documents while maintaining original document structure, doing English-to-French, English-to-German, French-to-English and German-to-English. Documents are initially translated on a workstation or server in batch queue or background mode, sharing resources with other processes or running during off-peak hours. When completed, the translation can be rev iewed and edited interactively using DP/Publisher. DP/Translator provides a standard bilingual dictionary for each language pair, and tools for users to create their own dictionaries, which can be used separately or in conjunction with the stand-ard dictionary. No prices – and be warned: machine translation systems are still pretty crude and need a great deal of work by a bi-lingual human editor.
