The Logitek Computers arm of Manchester-based Logitek Plc has joined forces with Dsseldorf-based Rein Elektronik GmbH to become the exclusive distributor of Rein’s M5 80286-based portable computer with removable hard disk in the UK. The Rein M5 laptop – made in Japan for Rein – was launched in the US in November 1989 under the Epson badge, and has been available for six months in mainland Europe through Rein and its subsidiaries. Logitek is emphasising the laptop’s removable hard disk as being ideal for data security, saying that the UK Ministry of Defence has already shown interest in the new product. Insurance companies, says the distributor, can compile hard disk libraries for example, with a confidential hard disk for each client. The M5 comes with a choice of 20Mb or 40Mb hard disks, with a 120Mb disk due next month – these are all interchangeable. By using more than one hard disk, says Logitek, the user has the possibility of using various operating systems. The laptop’s keyboard, battery and screen are also removable. The LCD display is a 640 by 430 dot full-aspect ratio, Extended Graphics Array screen with 16 shades of grey, and can be detached to be replaced by an external colour monitor. With a voltage-sensing power supply, the M5 will work on any international mains supply without adjustment, and it also has a NiCad battery – this considerably increases the laptop’s weight – which provides two and a half hours between charges. The product has an internal 16-bit expansion slot for optional cards such as network and multi-user hardware, facsimile cards, modems or memory expansion boards. The 80C286 processor runs at 12MHz or 8MHz and the system comes with 1Mb of memory expandable to 2Mb and internal 1.44Mb floppy disk as standard. The weight is a hefty 16 lbs 4 oz. Support, servicing and spare parts are available from Logitek’s nationwide dealer network, and LTSS Ltd, the support division of the Logitek Group will offer maintenance and support for Rein’s M series of which M5 is the first – the 80386-based M6, with more memory, is due to be launched in early 1991. The Rein M5 is available now from Logitek Computers, priced at UKP2,200 with single floppy disk, and UKP2,900 for the 40Mb hard disk – Logitek says the product is price-targeted to compete with offerings from Toshiba Corp and Compaq Computer Corp. An optional docking station will cost UKP400. Additional 40Mb drives cost UKP600, and the 120Mb drive will cost UKP1,000.
