EMC has launched new disk-based data protection capabilities with the new Data Domain Boost (DD Boost) software option that optimises and accelerates traditional backup software interaction with deduplication storage.
The company claims that DD Boost speeds up aggregate backup throughput on Data Domain deduplication storage systems by an average of 50%, while reducing load on backup LANs and backup servers. It is already supported by third party backup software such as Symantec NetBackup and Backup Exec.
EMC said that the DD Boost software library is distributed to the backup server and identifies data segments inline as they arrive. In addition to increasing the aggregate backup throughput of the storage system, this reduces local network traffic from 80 to 99%.
In addition, it also reduces the overall resource use on existing backup servers by 20 to 40% as it minimises data copy overhead. Separately, DD Boost also enables application level link aggregation, failover and load balancing, making optimal use of multiple links for throughput while adding further resilience and management flexibility, the company claims.
According to EMC, DD Boost can automate WAN vaulting for use in disaster recovery, remote office backup, or multi-site tape consolidation initiatives. Cross-site deduplication further minimises the required bandwidth.
In addition, DD Boost also enables backup applications to control network efficient Data Domain Replicator software. It also supports all Data Domain systems, including the new Data Domain Global Deduplication Array.
Brian Biles, vice president of product management at EMC Backup Recovery Systems Division, said: By distributing parts of the deduplication process to the backup server, everything from the backup server to the Data Domain systems gets faster and more efficient. It represents a pivotal architectural change that will underpin the next generation of disk-based data protection products. DD Boost literally thinks outside the box.
