AEG AG has, as reported briefly (CI No 951), bought the European Rolm Mil-Spec computer sales and sales support operations of Loral Corp for an undisclosed sum. Loral acquired the business with the Mil-Spec division of Rolm when it bought it from IBM Corp in 1985. The unit has been bought by AEG’s ATM division, and the sale was complemented by an agreement between the two that gives ATM exclusive rights to sell and service all Loral’s reuggedised and military computers in Europe – including the new Shark, which is based on the MIPS Computer Systems Inc RISC. Loral has also sold ATM manufacturing rights – subject to US government approval – to the Hawk/32 ruggedised version of a member of Data General’s Eclipse MV family of 32-bit minis: the processor boards are supplied by Data General and packaged in shockproof housings. AEG already owns Fort Lauderdale minimaker ModComp.
