Having found no buyer willing to pay its price for its defence units, Thorn EMI Plc is restructuring Thorn EMI Electronics by other means and is to buy the net assets and business of MEL, the Crawley, Sussex-based UK defence electronics division of Philips Electronic & Associated Industries Ltd, for UKP9.5m: MEL will be integrated with the Sensors Division of Thorn EMI Electronics, enabling resources to be rationalised; undoubtedly this means job losses but Colin Woodley of Thorn said it was too early to speculate; the restructuring of Thorn EMI Electronics, which has involved the closure of its Woking, Surrey division, and the sale of four of the six divisions of California-based subsidiary Systron Donner, has so far entailed a headcount reduction of 1,000 people.
