The Japanese have for some time been playing with glass substrates instead of aluminium for Winchester disk drives to improve density, but Glass Techno Co, bankrolled by C Itoh & Co, reckons it’s ready to go with glass ceramic substratebased magnetic platters that use an etching texture method to coat the disk. The partners claim that the new disks can store 200Mb on a 2.5 platter and 500Mb on a 3.5 platter. Toshiba Corp plans to market drives using the platters.
