Fierce sibling rivalry has broken out between the two resellers signed by Stellar Computer Corp for its GS1000 graphics supercomputer, Mitsui & Co and Asahi Chemical Industry: the first round was won by Asahi Chemical when at the Computer Graphics show in June it was able to show and demonstrate a beta test model of the GS1000, leaving Mitsui to talk about it and fume, but the second round went to Mitsui when Stellar founder Bill Poduska arrived in Japan a day late the other day, so that he missed a presentation planned by Asahi Chemical, and when he finally made it to his Tokyo hotel was immediately pounced on by the Mitsui folk and remained closeted with them for most of the rest of his visit; he emerged from a meeting with Mitsui president Koichiro Ejiri saying that the two sides had exchanged information which brought Stellar’s establishment on the Japanese market one step closer, although our relationship with Japan is only just beginning, and production here is some way down the track; our Tokyo correspondent notes that, reading between the lines, Poduska has not yet decided whether Stellar will form a joint venture or a wholly-owned Japanese subsidiary, but Mitsui is pitching hard for the latter, pointing to its successful relationship with Sperry Corp, now replicated intact in Nippon Unisys Co.
