Cabletron Systems Inc has developed an integrated remote network monitoring module for use in an intelligent wiring concentrator: the combination of Novell Inc’s LANtern network monitoring technology and Cabletron’s Multi Media Access Center intelligent wiring centre is claimed to offer continuous monitoring of network statistics using the Simple Network Management Protocol; the LANtern module diagnoses problems and monitors network performance, and it will also act as a network characterisation tool, tracking usage and traffic patterns on the network; it costs $4,000 and is available now from the Rochester, New Hampshire-based company
