AT&T Co has been advised by its accountants to get rid of the Unix Software Operation as quickly as possible because the business is a drain on its profits, and sources close to the negotiations say that X/Open Co Ltd is the most likely vehicle to buy the business, in a development that would effectively eliminate the roles of the rival Unix International Inc and Open Software Foundation Unix clubs – almost all the members of both of the organisations are also members of X/Open.
