IBM has decided that there is no point in either trying to popularise Displaywrite or reinventing the wheel by trying to write a new word processor for the AS/400, and has instead picked up Wordperfect Corp’s Wordperfect. IBM Word Processing Choice is a program that works with MS-DOS micros or PS/2s and the AS/400 PC Support Software to enable the use of WordPerfect as the editor on the AS/400. When users select work with documents in folders from the PC Support Organiser menu, Word Processing Choice enables them to create, view, revise or print documents using WordPerfect 4.2 Network or 5.0. The documents are edited using WordPerfect and stored on the AS/400 in the user’s document folder. The aim seems in part to encourage the use of personal computers as terminals to the AS/400; the support program will cost $70 from July 28.
