A new spreadsheet devloped specifically for use with the X Window System is launched at UniForum this week by Quality Software Products Inc, Culver City, California. Also running under OSF/Motif, eXclaim! is to be licensed via what is termed the Floating Licence Server technique – on an individual, rather than per-machine basis. Like Quality’s MasterPlan, it has standard spreadsheet features as found on Lotus 1-2-3 and Microsoft Excel, as well as a range of graphics capabilities, and the company says it is working with several Unix software houses to develop interfaces to desktop publishing and word processing packages. It runs on most workstations and X terminals with the generality of Unix variants, and will be compatible with the OSF/1 operating system when it is delivered. Out in the second quarter, eXclaim! goes from $1,000 up to $10,000 and will be distributed by UniPress in the US, Sphinx Ltd in the UK, Nixdorf Computer in Germany, AIR in Japan and Sisteco in Chile.
