Indian IT services provider Tata Consultancy Services has extended its footprint in South America, opening a new delivery centre in Buenos Aires, Argentina a destination expected to become increasingly popular as a BPO sourcing centre.

TCS said it is the first company to open facilities in a new technology district developed by the Argentine government in the Parque de los Patricios area of Buenos Aires.

The services supplier said its new centre will house the company’s first regional SAP Center of Excellence.

The city is well placed geographically because it can serve North American markets as Argentina lies in the same time-zone as the East US.

The company needs the 250 strong 10,000 square metre facility because it is working to close seven IT outsourcing deals worth over $100 million each in Latin America, according to a company official responsible for emerging markets business.

TCS first established operations in Argentina in 2002 and has some 7,000 employees working across Latin America, in Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Uruguay.

According to a recent study made by KMPG on next-generation BPO centres Buenos Aire is emerging as a favoured destination for software services.

In 1998, Buenos Aires was considered Latin America’s incubator for start-up Internet companies. IBM, HP, TCS, Teletech Sabre and Reuters already have BPO centres in the city.

Spanish is the official language, but Portuguese and English are also spoken in the city, which can be used to provide multi-lingual services. The prominent services sourced from Buenos Aires include software development, call centers, back-office operations such as data processing, and creative services such as design and media services
