Following on the heels of a report by CommerceNet and Nielson Media Research on the increase in internet purchasing (CI No 3,311), International Data Corp has released the results of a study which found that 17.7 million US households will be online by the end of 1997. That’s 18% of the total, up from 13% in 1996. Based on its findings, IDC reckons that 40 million households – or 38% – will subscribe to at least one online service by 2001. IDC points to the arrival of the sub-$1000 PC and the prevalence of the internet in the workplace as major factors in the increase in internet use at home.
