Dr Marion Tinsley – like that other famous Marion, who changed his name to John Wayne, Dr Tinsley is a bloke – won the World Draughts Championships for the 19th straight year, beating the Chinook program written by Canadian scientist Jonathan Schaeffer: it was the first time Dr Tinsley had had to play against a computer in the final.
