The UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office is reported to have mislaid some UKP77m after its computer system broke down: having decided to replace its existing system, the Foreign Office accepted an accountancy package marketed by Memory Computers Plc; first of all it failed to work properly, then Memory itself went into liquidation (CI No 1,370), and to cap it all, the old system gave up the ghost, forcing inexperienced staff to rely on the now defunct Irish company’s flawed offering; the Foreign Office believes that it’s not entirely a case of thanks for the memory and says that it expects soon to resolve imbalances and dump accounts.
