Motorola has been ranked as the top handset manufacturer overall in the US with 22.9% market share in the mobile subscriber group of 13 years and older, in January 2010, according to a comScore report on US mobile handset manufacturers.

comScore, a digital marketing intelligence provider, has ranked LG as second with 21.7% share, followed by Samsung (21.1% share), Nokia (9.1% share) and RIM (7.8% share).

In the smartphone platform market share, the report, however, found that RIM was the leading manufacturer with 43% of the US smartphone subscribers, followed by Apple at 25.1%, Microsoft at 15.7%, Google at 7.1% and Palm at 5.7%.

On an average during the November 2009 to January 2010 period, text messaging was used by 63.5% of US mobile subscribers, while 28.6% subscribers used browsers, 21.7% played games and 17.1% more subscribers accessed social networking sites or blogs, the report found.

The report studied key trends in the US mobile phone industry during the period between October 2009 and January 2010, and ranked the leading mobile original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and smartphone operating system (OS) platforms in the US.
