NCR Corp has come out with a high-end laser printer that delivers 88 pages per minute – up to 1.5m pages per month – for major companies with data centres that have high volume printing needs: the NCR 6481 laser printer system uses industry-standard – an embarrassing term that means IBM-proprietary – Advanced Function Printing software and Advanced Function Printing Data Stream, which enables users to combine alphanumeric characters, OCR characters, numerous fonts, symbols, logos and graphics on a single page; it comes with 8Mb of memory, needs 18 square feet of floor space and prints 240 by 240 dots per inch and is available at once at $172,900.
