The Russian Ministry of Railways is in the first stages of establishing a cellular telephone network based on its extensive hard-wired network and radio relay stations. According to Business World Newspaper, existing radio-relay facilities will be used as nodes in a future cellular system. Financial support for the project is to be provided by companies involved in the Russia Commodity and Raw Materials Exchange – RTSB – including Rinako Co. Says Victor Moskvitin, head of the Communication Centre of the Ministry on Railways, the preliminary stage of the project has been completed. Allocation of the necessary radio frequencies are still to be secured from Russia’s Communications Ministry.
