At the Open Software Foundation’s Distributed Management Environment announcement last week (CI No 1,761), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based Transarc Corp launched its transaction processing monitor and toolkit for heterogeneous networks of client-server Unix systems, which is due to ship next February. Encina 1.0, an initial raft of six products, is built upon the Distributed Computing Environment. IBM Corp says it will integrate the software with its CICS transaction processing system for AIX, Stratus Computer Inc will use Encina both on its FT Unix implementation, and on its proprietary VOS environment. Hewlett-Packard Co will implement the stuff on its Unix and proprietary lines, and Oracle Corp is to integrate it with its database technology. Sybase Inc, Ingres Corp and Informix Corp will develop interoperability between their respective databases and Encina: Transarc claims there are already 10 sites using the technology, inluding Citicorp in the US. Encina source code will be avialable for the HP 9000, IBM RS/6000, Digital Equipment Corp DECstations and Sun Microsystems Inc Sparcstations – prices go from $25,000 to $75,000 for the individual components.
